SOUND WALL FAQ:

What is a Sound Wall?

It is a way to organize phonemes and spelling patterns for students to use as a reference when they are spelling and reading words.  Words are grouped by phonemes (or sounds) and NOT beginning letters. There are 44 phonemes in the English language. A sound wall organizes these phonemes in a way that allow students to make sense of spelling patterns that make different sounds.

What is the difference between a sound wall and a word wall?

Word walls tend to be organized alphabetically using the first letter of the word.  Sight words, or high frequency words are typically placed on a word wall based on the first letter of the word.  When adding words to a word wall, teachers use the printed version and teach the pronunciation of that word. As stated above, words on the sound wall are organized by their sounds or spelling pattern.  When adding words to a sound wall, teachers first teach the sounds (or phonemes), then add the printed words that use the sound.

Why should I use a sound wall?

A sound wall can help children learn their grapheme (print) to phoneme (sound) relationships by giving them a reference point.  Students are explicitly taught the phonemes and proper articulation.  Sound walls provide consistent review of the sounds, improving their spelling and decoding skills.  By using the skills learned from the sound wall, students learn both high-frequency words and decode unknown words within texts.

How can I use a sound wall?

It can be empty at the beginning of the year.  It will grow as you teach the sounds and spelling patterns.  You can use the ‘lock’ icon to cover sounds you haven’t covered yet.  Introduce one sound at a time.  Draw the students’ attention to what your mouth is doing as you say the sound.  Focus their attention on the letters and the articulation card on your sound wall.  Connect how the clipart picture uses the sound.  Add words to the blank card to also use the same sound. Be sure to demonstrate how the students can use the sound wall as a reference tool.

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THIS RESOURCE:

Sarah P. - "This resource is worth every cent, plus more. The students have been gaining a tremendous amount of understanding from being introduced to new sounds and phonograms with the sound wall. They are learning faster and the learning is sticking better. I was absolutely amazed at how the dyslexic students in my class are now making more rapid progress with their phonics and spelling and reading because we are using the sound wall. Thank you so much. My students and I both LOVE your work."

Debra F. - "Thank you so much for creating this for us! It is so complete and affordable. I not only wanted the sound wall cards but individual charts for my resource students. Each of my students will have his/her own individual charts in their folders for my classroom. Other individual charts were too expensive. Thank you for another great product!"

Megan B. - "I reviewed a lot of sound walls before purchasing one, and I'm so glad I found this one. The pictures are clear, the included words are great examples (the authors seem to have taken regional accents into account and picked their words to work everywhere), and the bonus sound posters are invaluable... I can't believe they threw those in for free! This is the best sound wall I've seen."

This is exactly what I needed for my guided reading groups. I have been teaching many of these during the word work portion of my guided reading, and now my students have a great resource to take back with them as they move into independent reading. I’ve already made the posters for teaching and small posters for the student to have as a resource.

  2. Angela

This printed amazingly with my printer. The words and pictures are perfect for kids. I loved the different ways I could adapt for my classroom to fit my needs and space.

  3. Jenna Hinkel

This has been so helpful and I love the way it is laid out! I love the mouth placement for the sounds! It really helps the kids make the proper sound.

  7. Vicki T.

Amazing sound wall! Aligns perfectly with Science of Reading. My Instructional Facilitator liked it so much she took a photo of it up in my room. I just wish I’d noticed the video where it is suggested to print at less than 100% before setting it all up, so it didn’t need to take as much space on my wall. Still- love it! Amazing!

  8. Emily M.

This has been a game changer in my classroom for my students and my slow introduction into science of reading. I’ve had so much more success with this than a traditional word wall for students finding what makes a word tricky and how to solve difficult words when reading

  9. Mary S.

This resource is very organized to unpack. I have the word wall posted in the front of my room and use a reference to my students. I enjoy the bright colors and have purchased many products from this author.

  10. April L.

I love the real mouth pictures and the word cards that come with this.

  11. Maureen D.

Love having a ready to use resource for my kids. The personal sound walls have been a great addition to our writing folders and the visual cues are just what we need. I love having this addition to my classroom, and my students are constantly referring back to the wall in both reading and writing. It is a game changer!

  12. Jana B.

This was very engaging and my students were very successful in using it. I am excited to continue to use it as a year progresses.

I love the mouth formation, the sound coding, and the examples. I use this everyday in my classroom!

  14. Kelli H.

This is a great resource. I am not done prepping everything, but I have used several letters. I like that there are key words to go along with the sound wall.

  15. Cortny P.

I really liked that this resource has an online version that I can post in Google Classroom and the wall display. I also find similarities in key words that match phonics programs I use in class which helps with consistency. The mouth shape is also one of my most liked parts. This is a great resource to have for teaching phonemic awareness.

  16. Cathlin A.

I really enjoyed the resources; it is a new resource to implement in my class. Learning the SOR way.

  17. Brittany H.

Great resource for students. Find it to be more helpful for overall understanding of spelling instead of just memorization.

This is a great resource for my classroom! I have had a word wall for the past couple of years, but have been wanting to try a sound wall ever since I first heard about them. I love this product because it comes with everything you need. Students are able to see which letter combinations make the sounds they are hearing, which is super beneficial for their own writing and decoding. Thanks for a great resource!

  24. Evalina E.

This is AMAZING! I am currently using this to help my students with improving their spelling and decoding. Extremely happy with my purchase. I have replaced my word wall with this sound wall.

Thank you for the time and energy put into this resource. I especially appreciate the photos of children’s mouths for the Sound Wall. I appreciate the addition of the phonics posters. They are super cute, and I like that the sound wall has example words as well as the letter or blend or vowel team, etc. that goes with the sound.

  26. Haley Sotiros

I love this! We have a sound wall routine built into our morning and we love it. The pictures and words are nicely done. My students also use this when they are sounding out their own words. This is a very used and very helpful resource. Thank you!
